The following explains how Osama Bin Laden may be secreting the Philippines and Egypt. The potential of his residence will be examined through the history of both countries. His reasons for hiding in these areas will be determined by their political situations and government. Identifying the economic structure and how it affects his way of life, will allow to piece the plan to capture the world’s most wanted terrorist. Step by step, we will follow a brief overview of Osama’s past. This will provide a method of solving where he is and how to capture him.
The Philippines at first seems to be an unusual place for Osama Bin Laden to hide. But, Muslim traders made contact with its inhabitants until the arrival of the Europeans. People of the country were converted to the Roman Catholic religion by Spanish missionaries. The country was first visited by European Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Jose Rizal began a propaganda movement to inform the government of the injustices of the administration as well as the abuses of the friars. The country evolved into a commonwealth in 1935, which provided it with self-governance. Since it’s independence in 1946, it has faced economic and political instability. It’s existing president has been alleged with corruption related to election rigging. The law enforcement and intelligent agencies in a number of countries have arrested labelled terrorist suspects for breaking militant cells around the world.
The presidential-unitary republican run Philippines is a realm located in South East Asia. It is the 72nd largest country by area, and holds a population over 85 million. Five percent of these Filipinos are Muslim and live in Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago. They have been able to stand firm from the Spanish and Americans, willing to covert and conquest them for centuries. Political self-determination has been an issue the Philippine government has ignored. Spanish and Arabic are both prevalent languages amongst Filipinos, which are taught in Muslim schools; hence making it easier for Osama to communicate.
The country is a mountainous island about 300 000 square kilometres. It lies within the typhoon belt of the Western Pacific, thus experiencing about 19 typhoons a year. The average temperature for the country is 26.5°C, only experiencing three seasons; without Afghanistan’s cold winters. It holds numerous call center firms that have infused economical momentum in the Philippine market, generating thousands of jobs. Improvements to its infrastructure include; efficient tax systems to bolster government revenues, further deregulation and privatization, and increase in trade with the world. Its main economical trade partners are the U.S. and Japan. However, about 30 million people reportedly earned less than $2 a day in 2005.
The Philippine government consists of a head of state, a head of government, and a commander in chief of the armed forces. It’s current president is Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The country is clashing with Taiwan, China, Vietnam, and Malaysia over Spratly Islands’ oil and natural gas. Malaysia is in disagreement over Sabah, which was a gift to the Sultan of Sulu in 1703. This was from the Sultan of Brunei who was helped in defeating a rebellion, which has given the Philippine government power to reclaim lost territory.
Indian intelligence agencies believe that Osama Bin Laden fled to South East Asia during the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 to Kandahar. While the world was spotlighting the hijacking, military intelligence suggest that he moved to the Philippines. Al-Qaeda related terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah is sharing bomb-making expertise with with Muslim Filipinos. In order to capture Osama Bin Laden; the Philippine government must find the possible source of funding, that has aided terrorist attacks in the country. Jemaah Islamiyah has said to have provided nine explosive designs, and should be questioned upon the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden.
The Arab Republic of Egypt is a Middle Eastern country in North Africa. Known for its famous pyramids, it is the main political and cultural centre of Arab and Middle Eastern regions. Egyptians adopted Islamic and Arabic language after the Muslim conquest in the seventeenth century. As of June 18, 1953, it has been a republic organized under a multi-party semi-presidential system. Its residents are sceptical about the process of democratisation, because of election rigging similar to the Philippines. The easy re-election for President Mubarak prevented competitor Ayman Nour from victory, although promising a democratic election. Egypt has a significant influence amongst Arab states; playing mediator in disputes between Arab nations.
The economy of the country is dependent on agriculture, media, petroleum exports, and tourism. Trading partners include Eastern Europe, the U.S. and other Arab nations like Iraq and the Yemen Republic. Economic reforms and physical infrastructure have been planned by the government to improve development. As the most populous country in the Middle East it has a population of 79 million. 90% of the population practises Islamic traditions, while the remaining percent is Christian. Arab’s impact on the region has modified into the modern period. It’s predominant Muslim culture plays into its constitution, implying that any new legislation must agree with Islamic laws. The Ministry of Religious Affairs organized the Hanafi School of Islam, controlling mosques and overviews Muslim clerics. The Egyptian Academy of Arabic Language has regulated Arabic to the world. Governmnet policies have reoriented postsecondary education. The majority of Egypt is a big, sandy desert. It is bordered by Libya on the west, Sudan on the south, and Israel on the northeast. Dry climates have averaging temperatures between 80° and 90 °F.
Osama Bin Laden is believed to try to make Egypt an Islamic regime. His hopes were on setting up a military camp in the hills near and area called Assiout. Osama has tried to align with local militant groups to increase his reach and influence. His methods and connections have grown through the years as well as militant cells. Many terrorist have had connections to Egypt including suspected Ayman al-Zawahari; Osama’s right-hand man. Al-Zawahari emerged as the militant leader of the Egyptian Gihaf group, who has stated to have chemical and biological weapons intended to use against the United States and Israel. In order to capture Osama in Egypt; al-Zawahari must be questioned.
This has explained the reasons why Osama Bin Laden my be hiding in the Philippines and Egypt. His potential to be in these countries are related to connections with its citizens. Both countries are run under stained democracy. As a devoted Islamic, it would not be hard for him to live in both areas. His anger towards Western Culture indicates his dedication to the East. Methods of confining him, will only happen if we find al-Qaeda related individuals in Jemaah Islamiyah and al-Zawahari.
